Many of us that enjoy hiking and walking in nature do so because we appreciate the beauty and magic of nature and are fully aware of the invaluable benefits it has on our physical and mental well-being. But unfortunately we see too often that walkers are not necessarily environmentally aware. It is important to remember that nature has its own needs and it is important to treat it with respect and care if we want to continue to enjoy its wonder.
Leaving litter can still be a big problem on many busy walks in the UK. There is a philosophy of principles and ethics among the walking community that simply states 'leave no trace'. This idea emphasises the need to leave nature as you found it. Its central concern is respecting the environment you are walking in and aiming to leave it undisturbed by man-made waste. Plastic, glass or cans can be dangerous to wildlife and other walkers. Even paper, tissues and toilet paper can contain bleach and can be unhygienic to leave lying around. So do be responsible and aware of others that will want to enjoy the unspoiled landscapes as you do. If you were able to carry the packaging of food or drink items when heavier and unopened, then it does not require much effort to carry the lighter packaging to the nearest waste disposal locations.
You may be more of the adventurous explorer type that just cannot resist straying from signposted paths and established walkways. This can be harmful for the local wildlife and ecosystem so do be careful not to destroy delicate environments merely to satisfy your curiosity. Wildlife can also be scared of and disturbed by walkers, especially at mating times. It is therefore more sensitive to find out about the wildlife you are likely to encounter on your walk and to do your best not to disturb them as they go about their important business of survival.
So next time you are heading out to the hills, up to date on your intended route and kitted out in your
mountain gear to enjoy the marvel and magic of nature, do take time to think about how you can do this most mindfully - minimising the impact that walkers can have while trekking through the great outdoors. You can then have a wonderful time and know you are part of making sure that the future of the resource of nature is more secure too.
